When choosing your wedding photographer, I believe there are three key things you need to consider:

Do you like, no let’s make this LOVE their style of wedding photography?

This really goes without saying, but when choosing your wedding photographer you shouldn’t just like the work, you must love it! Does their photography make you emotional and it’s not even your wedding? Do you look at their photographs and think ‘WOW’?! Do the photographs capture what you would like to see in your wedding photographs? Are you looking for someone whose reportage style seeks out emotion, atmosphere, energy and fun or are you after a super styled fine art look? Or maybe you are after a photographer that has nailed the more traditional art of wedding photography with a certain colour pallet?

Does the price of the package match your budget?

Everyone has a budget, it’s can be different for everyone. Most wedding photographers offer different packages. They can range from the length of coverage to offering images only or to include a wedding album. Occasionally, photographers offer a discount for weddings that are off peek or can tailor a package to suit your own unique requirements, bear that in mind. Does the package have certain things included in it or could be purchased as an add on that you feel would be important for you to have. This could be a second shooter to record the groom preparation, all day coverage, thank you cards or a wedding album. Before you meet with wedding photographers have a think about what you think is vital the photograph your book can offer as part of their package.

Do you like and feel comfortable with the photographer?

This is possibly the most important point of the three. In my experience, if you don’t feel comfortable with the photographer you won’t feel relaxed enough to smile and they won’t be able to get the best out of you, which will be noticeable in your photographs.

I always like to meet up with potential clients in person or via Skype/FaceTime to ensure we have an opportunity to find out about one another, see if that connection is there, as well of finding out more about how the photographer works and talk through your wedding plans. You could book the most talented photographer in the world but if you don’t feel relaxed, they will have a hard job capturing your smiles and ‘you’!
