An intimate wedding. Five questions for a wedding photographer

How do you approach photographing a wedding day?

Wedding photographers all have their own approach to how they plan and execute photographing a wedding. Find out what it is they find important to photograph, and what details or events are they looking to record for you. Do they have a shoot list they work through or do they capture what they see.

If I was to describe my style of wedding photography I would say I focused on capturing the colour, joy, and fun of a wedding day.

I like to look for connections and love between the couple and their guests. I specialise in small intimate weddings, which are shorter coverage weddings perfect for elopements, small weddings, or those who only want certain parts of their wedding photographed.

Shorter coverage often includes bridal prep up until the reception and can come at a lower cost compared to traditional wedding photography packages.

Can I see examples of your photography?

Once you know the photographer fits your budget and is available for your date make sure you familiarise yourself with their portfolio. Look through examples of weddings in venues similar to yours, at the same time of year. What does their work look like and how do they approach photographing a wedding if it was to rain? It's not just about what they choose to photograph but how the colours they use to edit the wedding photographs also.

I think it's essential that my clients understand my style and approach before booking me as their wedding photographer. That's why I always share my portfolio with clients before they make their decision, direct them to my Instagram page and talk through how I approach photographing a wedding.

My style is authentic, colourful and relaxed. My goal is to make sure you enjoy the experience of having me around on your special day and that we have a good connection.

Do you take photos of my fiancé and I alone and family group shots

Not every wedding photographer asks for time alone with the bride and groom for couple shots. Instead, they prefer shots of you both in more of an unstated moment such as confetti or exchanging vows. That's why you need to be clear with what they offer and you decide in advance how you'd like to spend your wedding day.

Personally, I like to take couple and group photos, but only if you want me to! I'll need around 20 minutes with you both alone to get a lovely selection of photographs and I try to make them as relaxed and informal as possible. Group shots can take up to 30 minutes for up to eight groups, that depends on whether we have lost anyone along the way!

Do we chat before the wedding?

Absolutely! I always like to arrange a call a couple of weeks before the wedding to talk through the timeline, special details, and any group shots you'd like to have.

At larger weddings, I've been told I blend into the background, whilst I move about capturing special moments. With smaller weddings, this can be harder to do which makes it even more important we have a chat beforehand so you are sure you'll feel comfortable with me.

What is included in your wedding photography package?

Familiarise yourself with what packages your shortlist of photographers offers. Some may include a second shooter - someone who will capture the groom prep, the ceremony from the back of the church and more of those mingling images. Others may like to provide the images to you on a USB along with some prints or as a download.

Personally, I like to supply all the edited images as a download. The shorter period of coverage the less amount of images but as a rule of thumb - four hours of coverage tends to be around 300 photographs. A full day of up to 10 hours of coverage is around 700 photographs!

I always love to see my photographs printed and on display which is why I offer all my clients and their guests get 30% off any prints ordered within the first month.

There we have it - five questions for your wedding photographer! These questions should give you everything you need to know to help you decide on your perfect wedding photographer.
